Objectives of the Activity:
Summary:
The Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology organized a hands-on academic enrichment activity titled "Poster Exploration and Critical Reflection" for M.Sc. (Semester II) students of Biotechnology and Microbiology. This experiential learning exercise was held during the poster session of the International Conference on Multidisciplinary Approaches in Life Sciences (ICMALS-24) at IISU campus on 23 January 2025.
The primary aim was to foster critical engagement with scientific content and improve research interpretation and communication skills. Prior to the event, students were provided with a Poster Viewing Framework—a structured worksheet containing prompts to guide analysis. These included identifying research objectives, evaluating methodologies, interpreting results, assessing visual design, and considering real-world relevance and innovation.
Students were assigned specific posters and briefed on the goals of the activity, with an emphasis on elements essential to effective scientific communication. They then rotated through various poster stations, engaging in structured observation and discussion.
Following the viewing session, students collaborated in small groups to reflect on the posters reviewed. They shared insights, discussed research trends and innovations, and submitted their completed analysis frameworks. This exercise exposed them to a wide array of research topics and techniques, enriching their subject knowledge while cultivating a deeper appreciation for interdisciplinary science.
The interactive and peer-driven format of the activity not only enhanced their critical thinking and analytical abilities but also fostered communication, teamwork, and academic curiosity. By moving beyond passive observation, students gained meaningful experience in interpreting and critiquing scientific research.
Outcome of the Activity:
"Poster Exploration and Critical Reflection" emerged as a highly impactful and enriching academic initiative. It bridged the gap between observation and critical evaluation, equipping students with skills essential for scientific inquiry and communication. The collaborative nature of the activity promoted peer-to-peer learning and reflection, establishing it as a valuable addition to the academic curriculum. Students left the session with a broader understanding of current research practices and increased confidence in engaging with scientific literature and presentations.
