Objective: 

This will enable students to conceptualize and apply Bioreactors and fermentation processes, Industrial application of microbes and Gene manipulation techniques at Industrial and research levels both.

Unit I: 
Bioreactors and fermentation processes

Bioreactors:  Basic Design, Types of fermentation processes batch, fed batch and continuous cultures. Screening techniques, Raw materials used in media production, inoculum preparation, industrial sterilization.

Unit II: 
Industrial fermentations

Industrial Production of chemicals utilizing wastes: Alcohol (ethanol) acids (citric), antibiotics (Penicillin), Amino acids (Glutamic acid), Enzymes (Amylase, Lipase).

Unit III: 
Industrial application of microbes

Biomass based products: Biopesticides (Thuricide and Trichoderma), Yeast: SCP, Baker’s and Distiller’s yeast. Microbial transformation products: Steroids, Mushroom cultivation

Unit IV: 
Recombinant DNA Technology - I

Gene cloning vectors- Plasmids, Bacteriophages, Cosmids, phagemids, YAC, BAC; Enzymes used in gene manipulation- Restriction endonucleases, DNA polymerase, Polynucleotide kinase, ligase, Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase.

Recombinant DNA Technology- II

Methods of gene transfer, Making and applications of genomic and c-DNA libraries; Blotting Techniques- Southern, Northern and Western Blotting.
